Decaisnea Fargesii


Blue bean shrub, Dead man's fingers, Blue sausage fruit, Blue cucumber shrub. An upright, multi-stemmed, open deciduous shrub with pinnate leaves, dark green above, glaucous, mid-green beneath. Pendent panicles of petalless, green or yellow-green flowers in early summer are followed by pendent, cylindrical, dull, deep blue fruit with edible, gelatinous flesh. Will reach a height of 6m and a spread of 6m after 5-10 years.



Grow in fertile, neutral to alklaine, moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Shelter from cold, drying winds.


General Shrub Planting and care

  • Water the pot thoroughly and allow to drain fully.
  • If the Shrub is being planted in a lawn remove a circle of turf.
  • Dig a hole twice the size of the pot being planted and fork over the base. Adding a bucketful of planting compost.
  • Remove the pot gently, if well rooted cut off the pot.
  • Position used. Ensure that the top of the Root ball is level with the surrounding soil.
  • Replace the remaining soil and heel in, water the Shrub and area thoroughly.
  • Water regular until Shrub is established.
  • Apply some general fertiliser every spring.
