Astelia Chath. Silver Spear


Hardy, clump-forming perennial with long, silvery spear shaped leaves and occassional yellow flowers from female plants followed by orange berries. Uses include Architectural, City, Coastal, Beds and borders, Gravel, Low Maintenance, Foliage only. Will reach a height of 1.2m and a spread of 1.2m after 10-20 years.



Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained, preferably acid soil in full sun or partial shade. Foliage may be damaged by cold winds and hard frosts.


General Ornamental Grass Planting care

  • Water the pot thoroughly and allow to drain fully.
  • Dig a hole twice the size of the pot being planted and fork over the base. Adding some planting compost.
  • Remove the pot gently, if well rooted cut off the pot.
  • Ensure that the top of the Root ball is level with the surrounding soil.
  • Replace the remaining soil and heel in, water the area thoroughly.
  • Water regular until established.
  • Apply some general fertiliser every spring.
