Horse Radish


Armoracia rusticana, Horse radish, Red cole, Pepper root, Pepper turnip, Red cole, Horseradish. Vigorous perennial with fleshy, pungently aromatic tap-roots used for making horse raddish. Add to salads, Flavouring food and drinks, Beds and borders, Cottage/Informal, Foliage only, Wildlife. Will reach a height of 0.5m and a spread of 0.5m after 1-2 years.



Plant in light, fertile and deep, moist but well-drained soil in full sun (ideally your kitchen). Water freely in dry conditions to inhibit bolting.


General Herb Planting and care

  • Water the pot thoroughly and allow to drain fully.
  • Dig a hole twice the size of the pot being planted and fork over the base. Adding a bucketful of planting compost.
  • Remove the pot gently, if the Herb is well rooted cut off the pot.
  • Ensure that the top of the Root ball is level with the surrounding soil.
  • Replace the remaining soil and heel in, water the Herb and area thoroughly
  • Water regular until Herb is established.
  • Apply some general fertiliser every spring.
