Primula vialii Red Hot Poker

 

Provide a splash of vivid colour to borders and patio pots with this striking Primula. Violet-pink flower heads, each with a striking, bright-red, central spike rise majestically on slender, upright stems from the plant below. Forms a compact habit of deeply-veined, lance-shaped leaves that will grow to about 30cm across.

 

 

Plant in deep, moist but well-drained neutral to acid, humus-rich soil in full sun or part shade.

 

General Alpine Planting and care

  • Water the Alpine thoroughly and allow to drain fully
  • If the Alpine is being planted in a lawn remove a circle of turf
  • Dig a hole twice the size of the pot being planted and fork over the base Adding a bucketful of planting compost
  • Remove the pot gently, if the tree is well rooted cut off the pot
  • Ensure that the top of the Root ball is level with the surrounding soil
  • Replace the remaining soil and heel in well
  • Water the Alpine and area thoroughly, then again at least once a week during the first growing season
  • Apply some general fertiliser every spring
