Dianthus Whatfield Gem

 

Small perennial with linear, grey-green leaves. From late spring through summer, it bears dark-red, double flowers with white markings and edges to its petals. Will reach a height of 0.3m and a spread of 0.3m after 2-5 years.

 

 

Plant in well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil in full sun. Grows best in soil enriched with well-rotted manure or garden compost. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring.

 

General Alpine Planting and care

  • Water the Alpine thoroughly and allow to drain fully
  • If the Alpine is being planted in a lawn remove a circle of turf
  • Dig a hole twice the size of the pot being planted and fork over the base Adding a bucketful of planting compost
  • Remove the pot gently, if the tree is well rooted cut off the pot
  • Ensure that the top of the Root ball is level with the surrounding soil
  • Replace the remaining soil and heel in well
  • Water the Alpine and area thoroughly, then again at least once a week during the first growing season
  • Apply some general fertiliser every spring
